WHAT IS
scale ?
The Space ClimAte LEague (SCALE) is a collective action launched by Aerospace Valley in 2023 with the aim of supporting the commercial development of SMEs and start-ups offering climate services based on the use of space data. SCALE’s ambition is to disseminate these services and promote the use of space applications for climate change mitigation in order to facilitate their adoption by public and private players, through awareness-raising actions.
This initiative is financially supported by ADEME and French Tech.

SPACE APPLICATIONS FOR THE climatE
As part of fighting climate change, space already provides critical data that can be transformed into information to be assimilated into climate forecasting models. Satellites allow scientists to observe the planet continuously and provide a range of geo-referenced environmental data at different scales (world, regional, local). A critical source of data for climatologists, half of the Essential Climate Variables can only be measured from space.
While space data has been used for many years by the scientific community, today it is a source of business for many French startups. Since the implementation of the Copernicus program, which provides Earth Observation data free of charge and accessible to all, a multitude of private actors have been able to harness raw data produced by satellites and to transform them into decision support services useful for many application sectors such as the ecological transition. Today, the sources continue to multiply thanks to satellite constellations and the diversity of on-board instruments.
Satellites offer the advantage of providing recurring, global data tracked over time and which can be hybridized with complementary data (in-situ, IoT, socio-economic, textual data). This data fusion is facilitated by IA and Big Data technologies which enable to massively process the data and to develop a multitude of operational services commonly called space applications to support the climate action of public and private decision makers at different phases: diagnostic, tracking or assessment.
There are many application fields: resource management, territorial planning, ocean and coast, air quality, carbon emissions, natural risks, climate change, and luminous pollution, to name a few. And they involve both the public sector (development and monitoring of public policies) and the private sector (finance, insurance, asset management…).
RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT SPACE APPLICATIONS FOR CLIMATE ACTION
As part of its drive to raise awareness of the potential of space applications for climate action among decision-makers and public and private players, the SCALE collective is organising awareness-raising days to familiarise the general public with the many possible uses of these climate services. Set up as part of a co-construction approach with your organisation, these days will enable you to understand how spatial data can respond to your problems in the field, while presenting concrete cases of application.
Established in a co-construction approach with our organization, the awareness-raising days will enable you to better understand how space data can provide solutions to your challenges in the field, while presenting actual application case studies.
